Hill's and AVMA fight pet obesity
Veterinary Economics
On Jan. 20, representatives of Hill's Pet Nutrition Inc. and Dr. Greg Hammer, president of the AVMA, announced the creation of the Alliance for Healthier Pets, a new initiative that will focus on obesity awareness and prevention. "We want to give teams all the tools they need and drive owners into hospitals to learn what they need to do to make sure pets are a healthy weight," says Neil Thompson, president of Hill's Pet Nutrition.

The program's obesity awareness and prevention kit, available on request to veterinary healthcare teams, includes tools that help team members facilitate conversations with pet owners about pet obesity. Another program element, the PetFit Challenge, encourages veterinary healthcare teams and their clients to manage pets’ weight with regular weigh-ins, smart nutritional choices, monitored feeding, and regular exercise. An 18-city PetFit Tour began in Miami, Fla., Jan. 29, and will continue in major cities from the East to West Coasts through October.
